A Serious Look At Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is often acquired by adults, though it can also hit anyone across age groups. Children and infants can acquire Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease or GERD. In the same way, gestating women are also prone to having the condition. One possible cause of acid reflux is the habit of going to bed after eating a heavy meal and eating unhealthy foods. The most common symptom of this condition is heartburn or acid indigestion, a burning sensation on the chest area. Also, it is said that majority of individuals tend to have acid reflux occurrences at some point in their lives.

The trouble of acid reflux, however, is when gastric acid reaches the esophagus causing serious damage to the esophageal lining which can lead to GERD, a chronic illness.

Should you notice coughing, hoarseness of voice, sinusitis and persistent earaches, then immediately consult your doctor. Never neglect the condition as it might turn into a chronic untreatable illness such as throat ulcers or worst esophageal cancer.

Burning feeling on the chest area at least once a weak can also be a sign that you already have the condition. Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease are caused by stomach acids excess and can pose much danger to pregnant women and those who are fond of wearing tight clothes. Acquiring yeast infections can also be attributed to acid reflux.

Similarly, below normal acid level in one’s digestive system could also lead to GERD. It is important that bodily substances and hormones are at its normal level for the body systems to function at its best. The lack of acid can affect the proper opening of esophagus which allows food to be transferred from the throat to the stomach. When this occurs, food goes back to the throat together with stomach acids causing throat and chest pains.

Should you still encounter these symptoms even after going through a well-planned, balanced diet, then it is strongly advised that you seek medical help. This way, your doctor can prescribe you oral medications and other possible options to treat your condition. Some of the options are the following:

Healthy food intake: This is the first step to overcoming GERD, because no matter how good the oral medications you take in if you continue to put too much pressure on your digestive system, then all your efforts will be put to waste. GERD patients are advised to gradually and in the long run completely remove coffee, carbonated drinks, tea and tobacco from their system. More on acid reflux diet

Sleeping position and practices: Elevate the upper part of your bed to about six to eight inches. This will avoid the acid from going back to your throat while lying down. Also combine this habit with not having any food intake before bedtime. This will probably partially remove the painful occurrences of the condition.

Medications: Oral medications like famotidine and omeprazole will prevent excessive acid production. Antacids, in contrast, will stabilize the already secreted acids.

Surgical procedures: Among the operations that can permanently cure GERD is Nissen fundoplication. This is done by narrowing down the digestive tract muscles which will in turn stop acid from going up to the esophagus, thus preventing acid reflux.
