Acid Reflux Sore Throat

Acid Reflux pertains to the food and some gastric juices intend to go back to esophagus from the mouth. From that scenario, it causes inflammation on throat.

To explain further, our digestive system possesses a circular band called the lower esophageal sphincter. It is a muscle that separates the esophagus and the stomach. When the food reaches the stomach, this particular muscle automatically closes to prevent the gastric acid and the partly digested food to go back to the esophagus. However when the lower esophageal sphincter stops to function, all will just go back to the esophagus and eventually reach the mouth for vomiting and spitting.

The contents that came from the stomach the reaches the esophagus will result to inflammation of the esophagus and the throat, that’s why sore throat is one of the common symptoms of Acid Reflux.

Sore throat comes with other symptoms, though some of them are uncommon, like occurrence of pus on tonsil surface, drooling and vomiting. Aside from the, when a person is having sore throat, he or she may experience difficulty in breathing because of the narrowing of the passage of air particularly the pharynx and larynx. This results to the difficulty of circulation of air inside the body.

The pain of sore throat may be lessen and/or even vanish by using some natural remedies and medications that can be done at home. Gargling is an example. Gargling is effective because it soothes the throat. It will be more effective if you will take it with warm water and a little amount of salt mixed on it. Salt is needed because it can help to neutralize the acid that reached the throat. Get more sleep for faster recovery.  Ice cream and cold drinks are effective for lessening the sore of the throat. Vaporizers or humidifiers may sooth the pain in the throat. Sucking candy is effective as an alternative remedy because it helps saliva production. It is known that saliva is effective in neutralizing the acid.

If natural and home remedies are not effective enough for your case, there are still available medications prescribed by the doctors. Medicines are usually prescribed to people who experiences severe symptoms like breathing difficulty, dehydration or loss of water inside the body and severe pains. You should take antibiotics if it seems that viral or bacterial organisms already reached your throat. Rheumatic fever is also a symptom that can be prevented when taking medicines. Corticosteroids have an anti-inflammatory effect that soothes the severe pain of a sore throat.

One remedy is the usage of gravity by having an upright position most of the time because it prevents the gastric acid and the food to go back the esophagus. This can help prevent vomiting and spitting.

Eating habits should be on the right track. This can prevent Acid Reflux. It is recommended to eat earlier with small amount of food to digest it easily. With this, when asleep, digestion of food will not be a problem because it was already digested before going to bed. There are also drugs that help to neutralize the acid ion the stomach and esophagus  that can prevent sore throat resulted from Acid Reflux.
